The heart of social responsibility lies in reaching the underserved, amplifying voices, and fostering sustainable women empowerment. On May 7, 2024, the Association for Sustainable Women Empowerment (ASWE) embarked on a transformative journey to Wovia Village, Limbe, where internally displaced women and girls fight daily battles of survival and resilience. With the unwavering support of local civil society leaders, this initiative aimed to restore hope, uplift lives, and chart a path towards economic independence for the women of Wovia.
A Mission Rooted in Change
Wovia, a small yet resilient community, has faced multiple challenges, from displacement to economic hardship. ASWE’s visit was not merely an event but a strategic intervention aimed at long-term empowerment. With the guidance of the village youth president and local administrators, ASWE identified key areas where support was most needed—vocational skills training, mental well-being, and basic hygiene education.

Engagement with Women and Girls
More than 160 women and girls gathered to share their experiences, concerns, and aspirations. The conversations were raw and emotional, revealing a deep-seated desire for self-sufficiency and economic stability. Many expressed their wish to learn new skills that could generate income and provide for their families.
ASWE’s team encouraged an open dialogue, emphasizing that empowerment begins with opportunity. Women were invited to explore different vocational pathways, focusing on financial independence and community resilience.

Skill-Based Training and Future Prospects
ASWE proposed the establishment of a vocational training center, offering courses in:
- Sewing and tailoring
- Basket weaving and artisanal crafts
- Cosmetics and hairdressing
- Culinary arts and food processing
These skills were carefully selected to align with market demand, ensuring that women could convert training into livelihood. The initiative was met with enthusiasm, as many saw it as a beacon of hope for their future.
Health, Hygiene, and Mental Well-Being
Recognizing the interconnection between health and empowerment, ASWE distributed hygiene kits containing essential items like:
- Sanitary pads
- Soaps and lotions
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Discussions on mental health awareness were also a key component of the visit. Women were encouraged to speak about their struggles, seek support, and embrace the importance of mental well-being in their personal and professional lives.

Key messages included:
- The power of open communication in overcoming trauma.
- Recognizing signs of stress and mental fatigue.
- Building community networks for emotional and psychological support.
A Warm Reception and a Promise for the Future
The visit concluded with a heartfelt reception organized by the youth president of Wovia. The atmosphere was charged with gratitude and optimism. Civil society representatives, local leaders, and ASWE volunteers celebrated the beginning of a new chapter for Wovia’s women, pledging continuous support and follow-up initiatives.

Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Lasting Change
The success of ASWE’s field visit to Wovia is a testament to the power of collective action. By integrating vocational training, health education, and emotional support, ASWE is creating an ecosystem where women are not just supported but empowered to thrive.
ASWE remains committed to working with charity organizations, corporate partners, and civil society to ensure that initiatives like this reach more communities in need. The journey towards women’s economic liberation and social transformation has only just begun, and with continued support, the future looks promising for the resilient women of Wovia.
